Upgrade Benches first debuted back in Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 1, and as you can expect, interacting with it lets you upgrade your weapons, increasing its Rarity up one level and improving its stats; Damage, Fire Rate, Magazine Size, Reload Time, or what have you. Aside from upgrading your weapons just for the sake of buffing them, sometimes Quests task you with upgrading them as well. When you found an Upgrade Bench in Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 4, you can use upgrade a weapon from and up to:
- Common/Grey: Base
- Uncommon/Green: 50 Gold Bars
- Rare/Blue: 150 Gold Bars
- Epic/Purple: 250 Gold Bars
- Legendary/Orange: 350 Bars
- Exotic: Cannot upgrade to Exotic
However, keep in mind that finding weapons laying about in Vaults or buying Exotics from NPCs are also viable options to acquire rarer weapons, so you might want to hold your Gold Bars for something else instead. Especially since Epic Games has reworked the loot system starting from Fortnite Chapter 3, finding good guns is no longer a matter of pure luck.
