Michael Pachter has been one of the most vocal doubters of Nintendo’s Wii U. The analyst began shooting down the console quickly following its reveal at E3 2011, and continues to doubt its long term potential. Though he does believe that this negativity isn’t going to affect the system’s popularity, as the system could be quite hard to come by for the foreseeable future.
“Negativity overall will never go away so I expect the negativity to continue through the holidays,” said Pachter. “I don’t think this has much impact on the launch and continue to expect launch qualities to be sold out, and reorders to remain sold out through March.”
The Wii U launched less than a week ago, and much of the stock that arrived at retailers was reserved for those that had pre-ordered the system, making it harder for some to find the system. Critics have been kind to the Wii U, despite it needing a massive day one update, and having a less than perfect online infrastructure, many have praised Nintendo’s first HD offering. This praise and word of mouth from satisfied customers could make the new console even harder to come by as Christmas wishlists are completed.
Pachter predicted earlier this year that the Nintendo Wii U would face difficulty once this core group of Nintendo loyalists have been satisfied. He believes that sales for the console will be less than the Wii, and will face headwinds from next-gen consoles from Microsoft and Sony.
