Angry Birds is celebrating its tenth anniversary. The mobile game had taken the world by storm since its release a decade ago.

It was ten years ago that the world fell in love with a bunch of flying birds who loved to attack pigs. Angry Birds is now officially ten years old and is a big part of pop culture. The series has spawned sequels, tie-in games, and two feature-length animated films.

Angry Birds is beyond popular with over 4.5 billion downloads — furthermore, its the first mobile game to reach a billion downloads. The game has made its way to Antarctica, where at least nine people have downloaded and played. Astronauts play the game in space, and over 1.8 billion related products have sold worldwide.

Rovio, the makers of Angry Birds, have been champions of charitable causes. They have taken the anniversary celebration in-game. Angry Birds 2 called upon players to pop as many pigs as they can. Ten billion pigs popped was the goal, and it was reached. A $100,000 donation was made to UNICEF’s Education in Emergencies fund. Rovio helps disabled gamers play, fights for climate change causes, helps endangered species, and helps families coping with pediatric cancer. The birds may be angry, but they have a heart of gold.

There’s no stopping the franchise and the people who love playing it. It’s no doubt the game and the franchise will be around for years to come.
