Animal Crossing: New Horizons is almost here. Which is why Nintendo is hyping up its fanbase in several ways. A delightful, Animal Crossing-themed Switch will launch a few days before the game’s release. Pre-ordering the game through Target will get you an exclusive journal with a calendar. And that’s not to mention all the other pre-order accessories fans will be able to pick up. But one recent bit of news isn’t quite as positive. The game will only allow for one island per Switch console.
The newest entry of Nintendo’s life simulation series will let players build their town from the ground up on a deserted island. In past entries, such as the 3DS’ Animal Crossing: New Leaf, players could still only have one town. But with the Switch’s ability to have multiple user accounts, and therefore different save files for other games, this seems a bit strange. Even if players were to own more than one copy of the game, they would still need a separate Switch to create a new island. The Switch also stores save data internally, so SD cards will not get around this issue.
The shortcoming was recently tweeted out by the fan account ACPocketNews after discovering it on Nintendo of Australia’s website. You can find a disclaimer about the game’s local and online multiplayer towards the bottom of the page:
Animal Crossing: New Horizons allows up to eight players to play either locally or online. It also allows up to four people to play on one Switch. So even though they can’t create a new island, those you live with will still be able to join your new home. Nintendo actually disclosed these details at E3 last year. But being so close to the release date has caused them to resurface.
