Spider-Man has been seemingly everywhere in the news ever since the major announcement that he was going to be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a new partnership between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures. Sony is now looking to take the Spidey brand a step further with the reveal of an animated Spider-Man movie coming in 2018 that will be helmed by two of the hottest names in the industry right now.
Announced during CinemaCon by Sony Pictures Chairman Tim Rothman, it was revealed that Phil Lord and Chris Miller would be helming an animated Spider-Man feature film that would be coming July 20, 2018. Lord and Miller are on a roll right now, with the massive successes of the 21 Jump Street series and The Lego Movie. This news does come as a bit of a surprise for a few reasons, as Lord and Miller are already attached to write the upcoming The Flash movie.
Almost zero details about the movie itself were revealed during this announcement, outside of the date and who would be overseeing the project, but supposedly this movie will not be in continuity with any of Sony’s live action Spider-Man movies. Having an animated movie certainly would open up the possibilities, as there are many storylines that could be difficult to tell in a live-action movie.
Something like a Spider-Verse movie could be awesome, though it is unlikely they would start off with a storyline as ambitious as that. With this movie still being more than three years away, it’ll likely be awhile before we hear any news, so speculate away for the time being. What stories would you like to see show up in the animated movie series?
