The franchise has nine films, not including this upcoming film. James Wan and Leigh Whannell kickstarted the Saw film franchise with the 2003 short film of the same name. Kevin Greutert directed Saw VI and Saw: The Final Chapter and will direct the 2023 sequel. Lionsgate hasn’t released the plot details. The last film in the franchise was Spiral which starred Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson; it made $41 million worldwide. The franchise has grossed over $1 billion.
Wan and Whannell Revolutionized the Horror Genre with “Saw”
The first film became a box office hit and pop-culture phenomenon. The lengths that the victims of John “Jigsaw” Kramer went through to get out of their imprisonment were shocking. Not only did it shock viewers, but it impressed them. Jigsaw has different followers that continue his wicked games. The Saw film was an original idea and a different take on the horror genre. Like many original ideas, it spawned several sequels. It’s no surprise that Lionsgate wants to make another Saw sequel film for 2023. They don’t want the vision from Wan and Whannell to die. The tortuous story around Saw has been told in so many ways fans will wonder how this 2023 sequel will stand out. Lionsgate wants to continue to bring in the big bucks from this horror film franchise.
This film could blend into the background like many others or take what Whannell and Wan did to new lengths. Fans will have to wait until October 27, 2023, for all their questions to be answered.
