Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation are teaming to produce multiple movies based on the Smurfs franchise.

The first movie in the newly acquired franchise will be an animated musical, set for December 2024 release! Pam Brady, known for her work in South Park and Team America, is pinned to write the script. There is no detail on what the movie’s synopsis will be about, but it will undoubtedly be a comedy coming from a writer for South Park. The Smurfs was a popular and iconic animated series that ran from 1981 to 1989. The Smurfs are blue elf-like characters that live in the peaceful forest. It is one of the most well-known television series of all time.

Sony released the first movie back in 2011, and it became an instant hit. The movie stars Neil Patrick Harris, Hank Azaria, Katy Perry, Anton Yelchin, and Sofia Vergara. The first film made $563 million at the box office globally. The sequel didn’t do so well as it only made $347 million on a $105 million budget, and it was hit with bad reviews. Sony was planning a third movie in the franchise, but the project was scrapped.

In 2021, The Smurfs was revived for a new animated series on Nickelodeon Animation and had been signed for a second season, which will feature 26 episodes to the series! The first season’s 16 episodes star the voice talents of Davis Freeman, Youssef El Kaoukibi, Vincent Broes, and Jackie Jones.

The series is available on the Nickelodeon network, as well as on Hulu + Live TV. There is no news on whether The Smurfs movies will be a Paramount+ exclusive or a theatrical release. No casting has been announced, as it is early stages for the multiple movies in the franchise.

You can watch The Smurfs 2 on Netflix and the original series of The Smurfs on HBO Max now.
