Amiibo over the last few months have become a major part of Nintendo’s product line, and with the upcoming Splatoon being Nintendo’s newest IP, it would just make sense for the two to intersect at some point. Some details about this possibility first appeared late last week, when a South African retailer posted listings, sans images, for a few different Splatoon amiibo. Now, the official eShop listing for Splatoon has been revealed and it also seems to hint at the possibility of Splatoon amiibo.
The South African retailer also listed a few Super Smash Bros. based amiibo that are certain to come eventually, such as Greninja, but also are unannounced at this time. The question is whether they knew something that we don’t or if they just jumped the gun based on speculation, which could easily be the case with the Smash Bros. ones.
Within the eShop’s page for Splatoon, when scrolling down to “Related Software,” you will see the name amiibo alongside. This may just seem like something that all Nintendo games may have listed under related now, but it appears that right now only games with amiibo support have this listed.
It could simply be like Mario Kart 8, where existing amiibo give costumes or something like weapons in game, but it would just make sense for Nintendo to make an actual Splatoon line. There is a lot of hype behind this new IP and with the success of amiibo, it would seem like a match made in heaven. We are due for a new Nintendo Direct sometime very soon, so hopefully we’ll get some details on a release date for Splatoon and perhaps the included amiibo integration.
